On One of My Favorite Wedding Related Decisions So Far

For as long as I can remember, words have been my life. From my younger years of crafting homemade books, scripts, novels and teaching curriculum to my proclivity for novels and old smelly books from the library to my Bachelor’s degree in English, words have always been my thing.

They have a way of conveying every emotion which I’m unable to express otherwise. They have the power to be simple or complex, compelling and passionate, or soft and understated. They have the ability to transcend reality and transform something ordinary into something far more extraordinary.

Where else would I most love to implement those transformative, magical powers then one of the biggest days of my life? Only the biggest moment of my life – the ceremony. That is to say, I’ve chosen to write the entire wedding ceremony myself.

It was a fairly simple decision actually. I knew that I was looking forward to writing our vows and getting to articulate exactly how I feel about this incredibly amazing man I’m about to marry but that didn’t seem like enough. I wanted to be more involved.

Although the Boo was raised Catholic and I Protestant neither of us are current practitioners of our particular religion. So it seemed superficial to want a traditional ceremony with words and rituals that didn’t completely feel like us. And more than anything, I want the ceremony to feel like us.

So with a little help from Mrs. Star over at Weddingbee (seriously the best place for inspiration and all things wedding related) I decided to purchase The Wedding Ceremony Planner by Judith Johnson. I’m only half way through but I can tell you it has been such an amazing source of guidance and insight into how I can actually pull this off. It gives great advice on how the ceremony itself should flow, samples of different sections of the ceremony, ideas for reconfiguring them to fit your day, and handy check sheets for inspiration and editing of your big script.

I can honestly say that this is quickly growing to become one of my favorite and most anticipated parts of the day. Not only will the ceremony be the part where I get to marry the man of my dreams but it’s also now the part where we can do it in a way that fits us, embodies who we are, what we’re about and what we hope our future together will bring.

How do you feel about writing certain aspects of your day? Vows? Poems? The entire ceremony? Would you do it?

Taming the Tortured Mind

I’ve found that in my recent years I’ve become severely inclined to anxiety attacks.

I’m talking heart pounding, cold sweats, hands shaking, feeling like I’m going to go absolutely insane type attacks and I don’t know why.

I can pinpoint the exact night it all began; close to a year ago, laying in my bed, after consuming one too many margaritas, and watching the minutes on the clock tick closer and closer to my impending workday at 7am. Breathing erratically, sweating profusely, feeling as if I was literally at the crux of death. It was hands down the worst night of my life.

And ever since then the panic seems to follow me. It’s not a consistent everyday sort of thing but it’s enough to make me hate that it ever developed.

I’m fully aware that the loss of a job, income, stability, (and sometimes sanity) can do that to a person…produce unwarranted reactions in the human mind but I can’t help but wonder why now? Why me?

I realize that much of it stems from stress. Worry and anxiety over the unknown. The problems that greet me with each new day and the ones that inevitably lie before me. I know that worrying does nothing. Solves nothing. It’s a clichéd piece of advice I toss out unknowingly on any given day when the Boo or a friend fall victim to the same reckless, raucous invasion of the mind.

How will I pay my bills this month? When will I finally have money to go to the doctor? Will it be too late by then? Will I ever find another job? Have I completely let down my family? Will I ever make new friends? Is this really going to work? Were four years of college a complete waste of time? Do I even have anything to offer? When will things get better? If ever?

So much to think about. So much to grapple with. And yet knowing the consequences of over taxation, I can’t seem to shut it all off. I can’t seem to just take a deep breath and know that things will be alright.

I tell the Boo over and over that they will be ok. That WE will be ok. But what if they don’t? What if we’re not?

How do you balance between the insanity of worry and the serenity of hope? How do you compartmentalize the realist emotions with the optimistic? Is the dichotomy betwixt the two nonnegotiable?

(And yes, I just said “betwixt”. Eff off. I’m flexing my contemplative, introspective muscles.)

Help me if you can cause this little heart of mine is racing.

A Little Perspective

Inspired by the lovely Miss Jacqueline’s post today, I decided to put a little perspective on my life. In case you’re too lazy to click the link and you’re not already reading her blog (which you should be. Shame on you.) today she made me think.

She explained that although her life may seem perfect to some it’s really just like anyone else’s (which I would still beg to differ because her home is way better designed than mine and she writes like a poet laureate but whatever). Then she mentioned something I’d long forgotten: that while life isn’t always perfect it’s all about “finding the perfect moments in an imperfect day” (or something like that) and it really got me thinking.

While her posts are largely positive and inspirational, mine tend to veer towards the more cynical, self-deprecating side and while I’m not proposing I change my voice or my personality (because I like that just the way they are thankyouverymuch) maybe a change in perspective might do me some good.

So in an effort to find the perfect moments in an imperfect day here’s what I chose.

Rather than being annoyed and angry that I woke up entirely too late to do anything productive this morning, instead I chose to be thankful for the extra rest and the gorgeous man that woke me up so lovingly as he does every day. Curled up behind me, whispering “good morning” and gently kissing my neck I knew it would be a good day.

Rather than being depressed from once again hearing the lines “We regret to inform you that we have decided to fill the position elsewhere”, instead I chose to be more aggressive in my job search and realize that if I didn’t get that particular job there must be a better one out there for me somewhere.

Rather than being lazy and not working out because I’m not seeing the results I want, instead I chose to work out even harder than the day before. As long as I stay tenacious in my pursuit eventually I will get where I want to be.

Rather than being negative about the heat returning so soon, instead I chose to plan a gorgeous weekend in the sun so I can fully enjoy its return.

Rather than comparing my writing to others and feeling intimidated or inadequate, instead I chose to embrace who I am, the way I write, and all the flaws that comprise it.

I have found the perfect parts in what is categorically an imperfect day. What have you found?

I am Not

Unless you’ve been pulling an Osama and living under a rock for the last month then you’ve undoubtedly noticed the overwhelming onslaught of “25 things about me” lists that have been circulating Facebook and blogs alike.

(Yea, those obnoxious “notes” you only bothered to read the first 8 times you saw them until you were all like “What the f? Not this again!!)

Yea, I’m doing one. But you can blame some of my fellow lovelies, AJ and Kelly Marie, for tagging me and thus subjecting you to what’s about to transpire.

So in an effort to make things a little more interesting, I figured I’d change it up a bit and do 26 things that I’m not. Sound awesome? Too bad. It’s all I got.

1. I am not a gracious loser.
2. (I’m more of the girl who will violently throw the Monopoly board across the room if I sense defeat approaching.)

3. I am not very tactful.
4. (I’m more the person that garners the horrified looks at the dinner table when I blurt out something completely inappropriate and offensive. I don’t think I’ll ever learn to think before I speak.)

5. I am not a phone person.
6. (I’m more the girl who will e-mail, text, or snail mail you before I pick up the phone. And even then, I’ll silently pray for the answering machine so I can get out of it.)

7. I’m not skinny.
8. (I’m one of those people that you would hear referred to as “curvy” or “thick” simply for the sake of sparing my feelings when really they’re thinking something more like “plump” or “morbidly obese.” Take your pick.)

9. I am not a morning person.
10. (I’m more of the stay up till 4 sleep in till 11 and still be grumpy kinda girl. But if you make me breakfast I may go easy on you. Maybe.)

11. I am not a fighter.
12. (I’m more of a lover. Ok, wait I take that back. I’m totally a fighter. This usually goes hand in hand with numbers 3 and 4.)

13. I am not a genius (despite the self-proclamations to the contrary.)
14. (I’m more the kinda girl who will rewind the DVR when the Boo leaves the room during Jeopardy so when he comes back he thinks I really know all the answers but really I just watched them when he was away. I’m smooth like that.)

15. I’m not a very confident person.
16. (I’m more the kind of person that will fish like a deep sea pro for compliments and still not believe them even when I hear it.)

17. I’m not very thick-skinned.
18. (I’m more likely to cry at the drop of a hat sporadically and periodically throughout the course of the day.)

19. I am not that fond of animals.
20. (I am more the girl that has always harbored a raging fear of dogs and all things furry and will do just about anything in my power to stay away from them lest I should resort to number 18.)

21. I am not a shitty friend.
22. (I’m more the kind of girl who will stay up late at night with you, a case of beer, a pack of cigarettes and a bunch of Alanis Morisette songs after your boyfriend has screwed you over yet again but I’ll never complain.)

23. I am not a rich girl.
24. (I’m more learning to get by on the necessities so in the rare instance when I can afford something nice, I know how to appreciate it.)

25. I’m not perfect.
26. (I’m more of the flawed and slightly fucked up kinda girls. And I’m learning to be okay with that.)

What are you NOT?

What Defines You?

Listening to Kelly Clarkson’s newest single My Life Would Suck Without You on repeat over the last week has forced me to ponder a few introspective questions. If you’ve heard the song than you should get where I’m coming from and if not, stop everything you’re doing right now and go listen to it here. No really. Stop. Click. Listen. Then return. I’ll wait.

. . .

You’re welcome.

Now as I was saying, no one would ever question my undying love and adoration for Miss American Idol herself, however the lyrics of this song seem to beg a major question.

How much of ourselves are defined by the person we’re with?

This song implies that our self-worth is in direct correlation to who we are with. Proportionally, if you find yourself without someone does that mean you are worthless, nothing, or inconsequential?

Carrie Bradshaw would be appalled.

Lines such as “I’m nothing without you” seen here and in countless other pop/country/emo tortured love songs, give the impression that our lives are meaningless without someone else in it. That until we find that one elusive soul mate our lives will forever drone on in a fog of worthlessness and monotony. That it is up to someone else to make us complete.

What the eff is that about?

I get that it’s overdramatized for the song. I get that Ms. Clarkson likely didn’t even write it. And I get that most of us don’t take the message literally. However, I can’t help but think that this ideology reverberates with some of us from time to time. Particularly when we’re in between relationships. Beaten down, heart-broken and alone. It’s easy to feel like you’re life really does “suck”.

But I think the important thing here is to remember that while love and happiness are inextricably linked, that LOVE doesn’t necessarily have to come from a significant other. First and foremost it should come FROM yourself TO yourself. You must learn how to love you and who you are as an individual before anyone else can successfully love you as well.

Who you are as a person is NOT defined by the man you come home to every night or the woman on your arm. No more so than you are defined by the clothes you wear or the car you drive. Strip it all away and what you’re left with, raw and naked and vulnerable, that’s you. And that’s enough.

You are someone. You are significant. And most importantly you are complete.

Adding a boyfriend or girlfriend to the equation admittedly may enhance or compliment who you are but it does not solidify you’re existence. And being head over heels in love with yourself (in a non-narcissistic ego-maniacal sort of way) with confidence radiating from your pores, it’s highly likely you’ll have plenty of plus ones to choose from should you wish.

My point is: YOU are important with or without someone else. And don’t let anyone else (even Doll face Clarkson) tell you any different.

Now excuse me, I’m going to go drive around the city blasting this song with the windows down and singing these incredibly misguided and delusional lyrics at the top of my lungs. What? I never said it wasn’t catchy.

Stages

Why is it that everything in life seems to follow certain patterns or trends?

Nothing is ever left completely unchartered, unknown or variable. In every instance, in every stage of life, certain rules apply and previous cases can evidence such.

Albeit many of them are cliché phrases we throw about haphazardly on a day to day basis, they are clichés for a reason. Because they hold true.

For instance, “When it rains it pours” could not be proven more true in my life. Just when you think things couldn’t get any worse, they do.

Now conversely, another cliché holds “There’s a rainbow at the end of every storm” (or something like that) and in essence, that is true as well. I mean, think about it. It has to be true. After hell has unleashed all its fury on you, you’ve lost your job, your favorite pet has died, you’ve become evicted, divorced, and broke in one fell-swoop what else could possibly go wrong. Things have to get better, no?

My point is that life is predictable. In all its craziness and unpredictability it lends itself to be that which it is not (or not assumed to be) and that is predictable. Follow me?

People always say life is crazy, chaotic and a mystery none of us will ever comprehend. True, to some extent. But isn’t it also true that the very fact that we can say it is “crazy, chaotic, and a mystery none of us will ever comprehend” means that we have understood it somewhat?

Life in itself is a paradox and we’re all just struggling to figure out the riddle of the Sphinx.

In every stage of life, success, defeat, celebration, rejection, life, death, triumph and tribulation there are patterns that the natural laws of the universe compel it to follow. However, many times we get so caught up in the chaos of it all that we can’t focus on the pattern and learn how to fix it.

They say in losing someone there are stages of grief. Anger, denial, depression, acceptance (not necessarily in that order but you get the point) and for the most part, those stages hold true for most of us.

But just as grief has its own stages so do many other areas of our lives, yet we rarely notice, or even care to. Romantic relationships progress according to a pattern: immense lust, followed by like, love, and typically traded for safety, security and the dreaded, monotony. (Not saying every relationship follows this code or all are doomed to depreciation but bear with me.)

Needless to say, it should have come as no surprise to me when yesterday, a conversation with my Pops allowed me to discover this very epiphany. In asking how my job search was going and in an attempt to give me yet another infamous pep talk of “Don’t give up. The right job’s out there. Just gotta keep looking”, my dad made me realize something I hadn’t noticed before. That there were stages to the stage I’m in right now. Unemployment.

Have I lost you yet?

You see, when I first lost my job back in October I was pissed. Pissed at my boss for bouncing me checks and then laying me off. Pissed at the CEO for feeding me bullshit about “job security” and “wage reparations”. Pissed at the Department of Labor and the Attorney General for not caring that I and several other co-workers were being denied three weeks pay. Pissed at the unemployment office for making me wait almost a month before sending my first check I so desperately needed to pay off some of the collectors that were harassing me. And (do I even need to say it?) pissed at the collectors and creditors who refused to listen to my side of the story, labeled me as a government mooching degenerate and continued to harass me.

Then I was determined. Determined to get even and get my money back (Which never happened. The judicial process is a long, tedious and costly process. Avoid it at all costs.) Determined that I would get another job immediately and start making even more money than I was before. Determined to not let this get me down but to take it as a blessing. I had wanted out of that job anyway. Now I didn’t have to say I quit. I was laid-off. People would feel sorry for me, be blown away by my education and credentials and surely give me a job. And when 18,375,902 resumes were submitted, an equal number of applications filled out, multiple phone and in-person interviews rocked, personality and skill tests aced, every familial and friendly networking contact exhausted, every restaurant spoken with and selling my eggs given a quick and decisive “NO” by the Boo, I found myself in stage three.

I was sad. Sad and self-loathing was my middle name for weeks following the layoff. Depressed that this was happening. Sad that I had no money. Wallowing because I didn’t know what else to do. Feeling constantly sorry for myself and woeful over the current circumstances I found myself in. (And those circumstances definitely involved an ugly cry or two or ten on my part.) I wept and wept until there were no more tears.

And now I find myself amused. I’m no longer surprised when a mediocre restaurant requires one phone interview, two in-person interviews, one personality test, one skills assessment test, one food and wine knowledge test, and a live demo of table interactions and waitressing 101 with the manager. And yet, somehow despite charming them all, acing everything and having well over 5 years experience in the field, I still can’t get a call back. It no longer surprises me when the leasing consultant position I was “a shoe-in for” is suddenly given to a long lost cousin of the director looking for a job and I’m no longer shocked when I find that the school department that I submitted my application packet to back in MAY has “still not reached a conclusion in processing my paperwork.” And it certainly no longer surprises me when I hear the temp agency up the road doesn’t see me as a “viable candidate” because I don’t speak fluent Spanish. Despite the fact that Florida does happen to be in America. Where we speak English. Which is precisely what I have my BA in. ENGLISH. But whatever.

Gotta love the irony.

2008: Worst(ish) Year Ever

Yea, that basically about sums it up.

And just so you know I’m not exaggerating (For once. Yes, I’m well aware of my tendency to do so.) I’ll show you just how unequivocally depressing, horrendous and awful this year has been.

January 1, 2008: Arrested for a DUI. Trust me, sobering up from a New Years Eve night out to wallow in your never-ending singledom and comfort yourself with every form of alcohol ever created in a Duval County jail cell is probably the most hellacious thing on Earth. Plus, grey is soooo not my color. Needless to say, I should have known from that grave foreshadowing that 2008 might not exactly be my year.

March 24, 2008: My cousin unexpectedly dies. Probably the worst pain I’ve felt with regards to losing someone ever. Not a day goes by that I don’t think of him and wish he could be with us for just one more day. God, sometimes I still can’t even believe that he’s gone…

April 2008: Huge falling out with one of my best friends (at the time). Looking back, not such a loss (except on her part) but it sure made for a lot of unnecessary stress and tears.

January –July 2008: Three trips to court, probation, rehab, MADD classes, Drug and Alcohol classes, Community Service, no license or car and fines out the ass. Oh yeah, and did I mention that I literally had to work 10-12 hour days EVERY SINGLE DAY (serving at a restaurant) to make the money I needed to pay all the excessive fines and classes and still pay rent, insurance on the car I wasn’t using and everything else. Not exactly the greatest few months.

June 2008: Yet another falling out with another close friend. More stress, more tears, no fun.

July 2008: Move to one of the most disgusting god forsaken cities and search endlessly for a job. Become unemployed for one month. Oh yeah, still don’t have my car back because even though I’m off probation I don’t have enough money to pay the $400 to get my license back.

August 2008: Finally get a job. But it’s the worst job imaginable. Mundane work and menial pay surrounded by people who don’t speak English. Not a single soul. 4 days after starting said job, I check myself into the ER for sharp pains in my stomach and other bodily injuries. Incur thousands and thousands of dollars in hospital bills for one days stay and crappy care.

October 2008: Get sent to multiple collection agencies for bills that don’t even belong to me (thank you stupid whore of an ex roommate and your disgusting animals who thought our house was their personal litter box/backyard.) Received bounced check from sucky job. Get laid off 4 days later. Never receive pay for my final 3 weeks of work. Pursue legal action to no avail. Curse the day my former employers were born.

October 2008- Present: Remain unemployed (despite applying for just about every job you could possibly imagine), get by on a shoe string, and reluctantly rely heavily on the Boo for survival. Pray to God that 2009 gets better.

And the lone bright spot in all of this?

January 2008: Meet the Boo.

With any luck, one year from now, my Worst Year Ever will have done a 180 and look a little something like this.

Land amazing six figure job doing something I love.

Get engaged.

Build a gorgeous new house in Charlotte.

Pay off all debts.

Buy a new car/phone/wardrobe.

Begin grad school.

My family, friends, loved ones and I stay healthy, happy and stress free.

Live happily ever after.

What? A girl can dream.

Feelin' Good

So I know I suck at life right now. I completed NaBloPoMo (yay) and then fell off the face of the earth.

Very lame of me, I’m aware. But let me try and explain.

You see I’ve been trying to get my health in order. Like I’ve said before I wouldn’t say I’m fat (mostly because I just don’t like to admit it) but according to standard medical charts I could stand to lose some weight (ie. I’m not necessarily at a healthy weight for my height). So seeing as I’d like to avoid a stroke, heart attack and/or cancer and would at some point like to have children and live a long, full life for them, I figured it was in my best interest to take some serious action and NOW.

So I’ve started a new diet/hardcore 6 day workout regiment combining running, walking, yoga, pilates, exercise ball, and strength training. I’ve completely revamped my diet. No more beer, wine, fried foods or carbs and instead tons of fruits, vegetables, and protein. I’m also keeping a food and exercise journal, drinking close to a gallon of water a day, chugging protein shakes like they’re going out of style, taking 5 different vitamins and recording all of it. And so far I’m off to a good start.

Albeit I’ve only been on this much stricter plan since last Wednesday, I have yet to eff it up (even with a HUGE bag of peanut M&Ms in the house, a 12 pack of Modelos, and deep dish pizzas…all of which are very hard for me to pass up). But I’m doing it. And I must say, so far I’m very proud of myself. I know I’ve got a long way to go and I know there will be moments when I slip up. It's inevitable. But for some reason this time just seems different. This time feels like it will be the one where I stick to it and see results that I can be happy with, proud of. Or at least I hope so. I want to be able to feel confident and sexy again. I want to have more energy and just feel better. I want to like what I see in the mirror for once and I want to do it the right way.

So clearly since this new adopted lifestyle is now such an incremental part of my daily routine, I’ll likely be blogging about it from time to time and I’m asking for your support. I think it’d be nice to have people out there cheering me on and keeping me accountable. So thank you in advance for listening and supporting (and if not, thanks for letting me think you are).

Here’s to a better life….

Uncensored

Ever feel like there are things you want to say? Need to say or even HAVE to say? But for some reason or another you don’t (or you don’t enough). Life gets in the way. Feelings must be remembered and accounted for. Relationships must be coddled and in some cases, opinions must be squelched.

I read something somewhere that utilized this idea. (I feel awful that I can’t remember and if/when I do I promise I will link it.) Basically, they used their blog as a forum to say things to certain people in their life but without mentioning any names or clarification. It seemed extremely cathartic and I couldn’t resist the chance to do it myself. So, with that being said…

“Enough with the pretending. You can’t please everyone and in your attempt to do so you’re simply isolating the only real friend you’ve ever had. Just be real for once so things can go back to normal. Please.”

“He cheated on you. And besides that he’s not good enough for you. Never was.”

“Your mother can not support you forever. You’re a grown ass man. Get a job and keep it for once. It’s not that hard.”

“You are hands down the most inspiring person I know. I could never begin to comprehend the things that you’ve done and been through and yet survived so gracefully. You are truly my hero and I love you.”

“You are a never-ending parade of drama. Stop it. Just stop. All of it. It’s too much.”

“You are my everything. Period. And I think I would miss you even if we’d never met.”

“I miss you and I hate that our memories have been stalled because of distance. Just know that you will always be my soul mate.”

“Sorry sweetie but those skinny jeans are truly hideous.”

“All the crying used to bother me but now I realize why you did it. You really are truly great and although we’ve had our differences in the past I will never take you for granted again. I swear.”

“I love and miss you both and would do absolutely anything for either of you. No questions asked.”

Phew. I feel better now. Maybe you should go try it. Yea, you!

**Don't try and guess what goes to who. That would completely defeat the purpose and I won't tell. So just give it up! And if you really know me then you should be able to figure some of them out.
